GEOGRAPHY  OF YAVATMAL DISTRICT

PHYSICAL FEATURES

                        The District consists of masses of hilly country broken by board valleys and partially surrounded by plain. The southern half of Yavatmal taluka, which is just in the middle of the District, is a plateau with very steep sides Here and there it ries into ridges or into flat-topped or pointed hills. Steep, rough ranges of hills occur to east and west right across the District. All this country belongs to the Balaghat, the southern hills of Berar. On the north the District extends into the Payanghat the valley of Berar. That valley varies from forty to fifty miles in width and runs east and west completely across the Province. The small part of it that belong to Yavatmal District forms a belt of plain from five to fourteen miles in breadth along the north of Yavatmal and Darwha talukas. The Wardha valley, which marks the boundary of the District for over a hundred miles, continues this belt of plain across the north of Kelapur taluka and the northern and eastern sides of Wani taluka. Similarly, the Penganga River gives a strip of plain in many parts of its course along the southern border of the District. The tributaries of the Penganga again have formed valleys, often some miles in breadth, through the hilly country.

         The district of Yavatmal is shown on the map of Maharashtra state. This district is situated in the eastern (Vidharbha) region of the state.

Boundaries

 

                The districts of Hingoli and Washim are to the west of Yavatmal district Amravati and Wardha districts are to the north. The district of Chandrapur is to the east. Nanded district and the state of Andhra Pradesh lie to the south of Yavatmal district.
